Chantal Villemure and Catherine Bushnell of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Bethesda, Md used MRI scans to look at the brains of Yogis and non-Yogis.

They discovered that the more someone practised Yoga, the larger certain areas of their brains were. They found that the Yogis had a larger:

–    Somatosensory Cortex: which contains a mental map of our body.
–    Superior Parietal Cortex: which is involved in directing attention.
–    Hippocampus: a region of the brain critical to dampening stress.
–    Precuneus and Posterior Cingulate Cortex: areas key to our concept of self.

In other words… your brain becomes better adapted to handling stress and stressful situations. You also experience clearer thoughts, and you have more self-awareness, which leads to better decisions in general.
