About Leisa
I’m Leisa James. I’m a movement and wellbeing practitioner in Adelaide, and I come to you — your lounge room, your back deck, wherever you feel most like yourself.
Most of the women I work with are somewhere between forty-five and seventy. They’re tired. A bit stiff. Carrying more than they let on. You don’t need to arrive flexible, fit, calm or certain about what you need — you just need to be willing to begin.
My story
The first was repetitive strain through both hamstrings. Nothing dramatic to look at, but it turned everything I loved doing into something I had to think about first, and then into something I quietly stopped doing.
The second arrived at forty-nine and floored me. Severe osteoarthritis through my spine, with bulging discs on top of it. I remember sitting there genuinely shocked.
What I was offered was pain relief. For a lot of people that is exactly the right path, and it is a decision between you and your doctor. But I wanted to know whether I could change what was happening in my body, rather than put a bandaid over the top of it and carry on.
So my own practice stopped being practice and became rehabilitation. Yoga. Pilates. Breathwork. Meditation. Acupressure. Reiki. Small things, done often, on plenty of days when I did not feel like doing any of it. I learned to work out what my body could actually do that morning and start there, which was not how I had been taught and not how I had been teaching.
It took time. But I got my body back, and I got my life back with it.
It changed everything about how I teach, and it is why I am useful to people whose bodies are not straightforward. Since then I have worked alongside clients living with:
Knee and hip replacements · Frozen shoulder · Disc problems · Arthritis · Osteoporosis · Multiple sclerosis · Dementia, alongside their families
Every one of them taught me something I could not have learned any other way. I also went back and studied why any of it worked. Physiology, anatomy, yogic psychology.
Somewhere in the middle of all that I rebuilt the rest of my life too. At thirty-nine I left an unhappy marriage and came out as gay. I mention it because I know what it costs to start again halfway through, and I know it can be done.
So when you tell me your shoulder has seized up, or you just do not feel like yourself anymore, I am not reading it off a chart. I have sat where you are sitting.
Training and experience
I kept studying because I kept meeting people the last method couldn’t help. Here’s what sits behind the work.
Senior first aid and mental health first aid trained. Working With Children check and national police clearance, both current.
Getting started
You do not have to know what you need. Most people do not when they first get in touch, and that is completely fine. Tell me a little about what is going on, and we will work out together whether this is right for you.
There is no obligation and no pressure. If I am not the right person, I will say so and point you somewhere better.
